Did You Know?

Lyme disease is a growing problem in the northeastern part of North America, with most cases occurring in New England and the Mid-Atlantic region. Also known as Lyme Borreliosis, it was first identified in Lyme, Connecticut in the 1970's. The disease is caused by a distinctive kind of bacteria (called a spirochete) which is primarily hosted by deer ticks and mice. When infected ticks bite humans, initial symptoms may include a bull's-eye rash and flu-like symptoms.

This disease is most successfully treated when diagnosed early.  If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system, potenially causing permanent damage.

Anyone who spends time outdoors should watch for ticks and signs of this disease, and consult a health professional if a tick bite is suspected.
