LGBTQ Resources

The Hidden Voices LGBTQ+ project was initiated to help New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) students learn about and honor the innumerable people who questioned and broke the normed expectations of gender and sexuality, and who were therefore often hidden from the traditional historical record. These individuals influenced the social, political, artistic, and economic landscape in so many ways, and their contributions continue to shape our history and identity. These lesson plans were developed by the NYCDOE Department of Social Studies and Civics in collaboration with scholars and teacher curriculum writers.

One Institute has partnered with the UCLA History-Geography Project, OUT for Safe Schools at LA LGBT Center, and ONE Archives at the USC Libraries to host K-12 curriculum symposiums and provide LGBTQ+ history lesson plans for educators at no cost. The lesson plans comply with California’s FAIR Education Act and History-Social Science Framework, which requires California K–12 schools to integrate fair, accurate, inclusive and respectful representations of LGBTQ+ communities into their social studies and history classes.

This website is dedicated to “Teaching LGBTQ History” which primarily focuses on providing resources and materials that fulfill the requirements put forth by the FAIR Education Act with regards to LGBTQ history. As Tom Adams, Deputy Superintendent of the California Department of Education once stated, “These standards are the floor, not the ceiling, for what we want to teach.” As the website and resources develop, we will be including lesson plans and materials that educators in California, and beyond, can use to teach about LGBTQ history in every time period.
