Ben Boone

Ben Boone

Type: Speaker

About: "I'm a writer and graduate of Emerson College in Boston who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. My first hospitalization occurred the day after my graduation ceremony. That was fifteen years ago. I have struggled with my mental illness ever since, but I have also made much progress under the care of numerous doctors.

I wrote a book about my experience, titled “ Minority of Mind,” which has received a lot of attention and led to presentations throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.

During the last five years, since my first book was published, I have spoken to mental health consumers, professional health care providers, funding organizations, and to students and clinicians at college campuses.

I wrote 'Minority of Mind' as a manifestation of me, rather than a debilitating disability; to challenge how society often defines mental illness and how I define it for myself. I also wrote it so my parents wouldn’t think of me as a sick son.

My presentations have included a range of topics tailored to each organization. They begin with my personal account of mental illness and often explain the need for early intervention, the importance of family dynamics and quality of care. One presentation titled: 'Psychosis 101—My Most Difficult Course' focuses on the prodromal phase of young minds in college, and the related topics of school, friends, and family.

I began experiencing my symptoms as a junior in college and wish I had more resources at the time to articulate what I was experiencing and get help sooner.

This is why I make presentations to mental health providers, colleges and families about ways to improve quality of care, and offer approaches patients can use for recovery. I also work as a life coach peer contributor."
