Summary of the Affordable Care Act - the basics from the Kaiser Family Foundation. This Adobe Acrobat document explains all the basics about the law and is a good starting point to understanding the Affordable Care Act.

Health Insurance Glossary - This page helps you understand terms used in the health insurance industry.

Healthcare.gov  The official federal website of the Affordable Care Act. A good source of general information, but to apply for coverage New Yorkers will be directed to the New York Health Exchange site (next on this list).

New York State of Health  New York's own health exchange, where individuals, families and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees can shop for health insurance plans. 

Find Insurance Options (finder.healthcare.gov) - This site will help you if you want to look at options outside the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Federal Health Care Reform in New York State  This site has explanations of how the new law will affect people who currently use other programs such as Child Health Plus, Medicare and Cobra.

Consumer Services Society of New York  This site is specific to New York, and has helpful information for both individuals and businesses.

Child Health Plus  A program that offers affordable health insurance for New York's children.

Kaiser Family Foundation  This site offers a wealth of resources, including an interactive subsidy calculator, policy analysis, and facts about the Affordable Care Act.

Coverage For All - This organization helps you explore all of your options with an easy, anonymous questionnaire.

Journal of the American Medical Association Flowchart  A helpful infographic to show who is eligible for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

Glossary at Healthcare.gov  Look up insurance terms here to help you understand the features of health insurance coverage.

Protect Yourself from Fraud  A resource from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services gives advice on how to avoid scams and fraud in the health insurance marketplace.

Important Facts and Dates

The official websites for the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace are available now. New York residents and small businesses will use the NY State of Health website to shop for coverage. 

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, is a law that puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will be implemented in stages over a multi-year period.  The purpose of the law is to provide quality, affordable health care for all Americans. 

Important dates for 2020 enrollment in New York:

The deadline to enroll in a Qualified Health Plan for 2020 is January 31.

Where to Find Help

The New York State of Health Website (info.nystateofhealth.ny.gov/) is designed to allow individuals and small business to easily shop online for health insurance plans.  If you need further assistance, however, there are several options below.

New York Customer Service Center: Toll free 1-855-355-5777

The above number will be staffed:

Monday - Friday 8am-8pm
Saturday - 9am-1pm

Find Local In-Person Help:  The agencies below have received grants and training to offer assistance in our region. If you have questions that would be better addressed with in-person help, contact one of the agencies to find out where and when you can meet with a certified "navigator" with special training in the details of the Affordable Care Act.
